Shadowing and Externships

Clarendon Animal Care is dedicated to not only providing the best medical care to our patients, but we strive to educate our clients and those in the community about animal health and wellness. The basis for our externship and shadowing programs are to allow curious minds the ability to walk in shoes of a professional in this field for a few hours or over the span of several weeks. During this time the individual will experience everything from appointment flow, patient intake and care, surgical protocols and procedures and the daily life inside an AAHA-accredited veterinary hospital.

Our externship program is geared towards individuals that are 15 years of age or older and are seriously considering studying to be a veterinarian, a licensed veterinary technician (LVT) or are contemplating a change in career path. This individual must be dedicated to a specific weekly schedule discussed and arranged by the practice manager and applicant which can vary depending on the individual’s availability and hospital’s offering.

Applicants interested in our shadowing program must be a student between the ages of 10-14 years old and possess the desire to learn about not only the field of veterinary medicine, but the workforce as well. The student would come prepared to spend anywhere from 3-4 hours one evening after school at the hospital shadowing one of our practice owners or associate veterinarians. If time and scheduling permits the student will also be able to view care and treatment of animals that are hospitalized.

All prospective applicants are required to fill out the application at the bottom of this page and submit it to the practice manager at sara@clarendonanimalcare.com by the deadlines below. Our programs rotate on a quarterly basis and we can only accommodate a certain number of individuals during each term.

Quarter 1: Jan-March (Deadline for applications Dec. 1st)

Quarter 2: April-June (Deadline for applications March 1st)

Quarter 3: July-September (Deadline for applications June 1st)

Quarter 4: October-December (Deadline for applications September 1st)

Please keep in mind that besides seeing our incredibly adorable patients and learning from our extremely knowledgeable staff, Clarendon Animal Care will maintain its focus on providing our clients with outstanding customer service and our patients with the best medical care. We will do our best to answer questions and provide our applicants with the opportunity to see as much of our day as we can, however we do reserve the right to limit a student’s interaction depending on the patient, client or medical provider’s needs.

These positions will be strictly visual roles due to liability reasons and we ask that this is taken into consideration prior to applying. We also ask you to consider that you will be entering an environment where standing for long periods of time is required as well as an immense amount of pensive listening in order to allow the hospital staff to efficiently do their jobs.

If the field of veterinary medicine and working amongst awesomely passionate people is something of interest to you or a student you know please encourage them to check out this page and fill out an application!
