Heartworm Disease 101
Heartworm disease is caused by a nematode parasite Dirofilaria immitis. This parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes, and makes its home in the pulmonary artery (blood vessel going from the heart to the lungs) and the right atrium (chamber of the heart).
