Thanksgiving and Pets

It’s November, which means Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Keep your pets safe and healthy this Thanksgiving (and year-round)! Below, we rounded up our top safety tips. Want to learn more? Check out what the ASPCA and the AVMA have to say.

  1. No turkey for Fido

Turkey and turkey skin can cause an uncommon but potentially very serious condition known as pancreatitis. If you’re tempted to give your pet a small bite of turkey, keep it boneless and well-cooked. Undercooked turkey may contain the salmonella bacteria and bones can be problematic for the digestive tract.

  2. Skip the dessert

While baking, keep pets away from the batter; raw eggs may contain the salmonella bacteria. Also, chocolate can be harmful and the artificial sweetener called xylitol (often used in sugar-free baked goods and gum) can be deadly.

  3. Avoid bread dough

Raw yeast dough can cause painful gas, dangerous bloating and intoxication from ethanol formation.

  4. Put trash away

Tightly secure turkey carcasses bones and any strings, bags, and packaging. Keep trash away from curious pets - we suggest putting trash in a garage or behind a closed door.

  5. Keep decorations out of reach

Watch your pets around festive decorations, especially lit candles that can cause fires and decorations like pine needles that can cause intestinal blockages if ingested. Also, keep in mind some plants and flowers are deadly to dogs and cats
