Pump Up the Protein!?

The media has trained us to associate certain things with cats like drinking milk, eating fish, going crazy over wet, canned food…but what should a cat’s diet actually be? Well for one thing, it probably needs more protein than you thought! But why? Cats need a total of 22 amino acids and get half of those from their diet! Particularly from animal protein. So how do you know if your cat has enough protein in their diet? Check out this article(goes to new website)(opens in a new tab) to learn how many grams of protein your cat should be consuming and how to calculate that!

Adopt! Don’t Shop!

Thinking of adding a furry friend to the family? Adopt, don’t shop! There are roughly 6.3 MILLION pets in shelters a year!! While there’s no shortage of puppies and kittens either, take the time to also consider adult dogs and cats; they often have the same qualities you’re looking for with more refined skills, better-listening abilities, and a backlog of love to give! That doesn’t mean that adoption comes without consideration and planning – for you, your family, and your home.

So how do you successfully adopt, not shop? If you or your family are looking for a feline companion to add to your household, check out this article(goes to new website)(opens in a new tab)! On the other hand, if you’re feeling the void in your life in the shape of man’s best friend check out this page(goes to new website)(opens in a new tab)!

DVM Blog Post Highlight: Feline Diabetes Management

In this month’s DVM Blog post(goes to new website)(opens in a new tab), Dr. Carr dives into the recent advances in feline diabetes management! Did you know, almost all dogs have insulin-dependent diabetes, similar to Type I in humans, while cats are often non-insulin-dependent (at least to start), similar to Type II in humans? This leads to a difference in treatment needed, as roughly 25% of cats have an underlying condition that will result in insulin dependency and difficulty with regulation in typical treatment.

Enter Bexacat and Senvelgo; both of these drugs are SGLT2 (Sodium Glucose Transporter) inhibitors which cause large amounts of loss of glucose through urine. This is beneficial to diabetics who have excessive amounts of circulating glucose and helps to keep the blood glucose levels in check, allowing the pancreas to recover and symptoms of diabetes to be alleviated.
